The „Ficinus” workers’ settlement in Wirek, a district of Ruda Śląska, is probably not so knowm and impressive as Giszowiec or Nikiszowiec in Katowice, but it has its own style and extraordinary features. The houses lining Pawła St were built in 1860s not of brick, but of sandstone extraxted from the Slesian quarries. The Miners working in the nearby  mine Gottessegen, which means God’s Blessing, lived in these houses.

    Bytom
As the process of the revitalization of brownfield sites is still underway, not abandoned or underused industrial and commercial facilities have been redeveloped or reused. One of the first examples of the adaptation of an industrial plant for residential purposes is Bolko Loft within the premises of the former Mining and Metallurgical Plant “Biały Orzeł” - "White Eagle" in Bytom. The project was immediately recognized, and in 2006, it was selected in the competition -"Poland. Icons of architecture”, as one of the 20 most interesting architectural projects in Poland after 1989.

The water tower standing at Oświęcimska Street in Bytom, is worth of interest due to its innovative design and form, which is an expression of functionalism, which at the time of its construction was a fashionable architectural style. The tower was erected in 1934-1935 on pillars and on deep foundations, which protect the 44- meter tall building from the effects of mining tremors. The tower was built of reinforced concrete and, in particular, of high-quality portland cement.

At present, it also possesses archaeological, historical, ethnographic, travel and natural history collections. The museum, located in the former mining administration building, which later housed the school of mining, was built in the first half of the nineteenth century. Close to the ""Sztygarka"", there is a drill mine open to the public."

    Ruda Śląska
In 1997, the last tone of coal was mined from the shaft "Central" of the mine "Wawel" in Ruda Śląska. In this way, a nearly 250-year history of mining in this part of Upper Silesia ended up. Interesting facilities including the shaft “Mikołaj” have remained. The buildings of the shaft "Franciszek" are also worth seeing. The 19th-century buildings of a fire station and of an engine room, as well as a steel headframe still await revitalization.

    Bytom
"The nearly 100-year-old power plant ""Szombierki"" in Bytom is called an ""industrial cathedral"". The brick buildings were designed by cousins, Georg and Emil Zillmann, on commission of the Schaffgotsch company. At that time, it was one of the major power plants in Silesia. To this day, we are impressed by its size and style reminiscent of modernism. From a distance, we can see a clock tower and three chimneys. In recent years, the premises of the power plant have become a venue for ambitious cultural events."
